Observations on the Food of Feral Cats on Campbell Island

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Subantarctic Campbell Island (52 S, 169 E), the southernmost of the outlying islands of New Zealand, is a Nature Reserve for the preservation of flora and fauna. It has been heavily modified by man and introduced animals and was farmed from before the turn of the century until 1931. The date cats (Felis catus) were introduced to Campbell Island is not known, but they were probably brought as pets to control rats (Rattus norvegicus) during the sheep-farming era. Joe Timms, who lived on the island from 1912 until 1916, found no cats there (Kerr and Judd, 1978), so the first may have been taken to the island after 1916.

Foggo and Meurk: Jacquemart Island, Campbell Island Group
This paper describes the first visit to Jacquemart Island in the south of the subantarctic Campbell Island group. The island contrasts with the main island by the absence of introduced grazing mammals, rats (Rattus spp.) and feral cats (Felis catus), and in the dominance of palatable plant species. A survey of the main vegetation communities was made and bird species seen were recorded. Specime...

Background and aims: Cats carry a lot of zoonotic parasites such as Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) which causes toxoplasmosis in warm-blooded animals. Toxoplasmosis includes wide range of symptoms in its intermediate and definitive hosts but the worst symptoms have been seen in pregnant women and also on immunocompromised hosts. Considering the importance of the fact that cats are as the only de...

On Amami Oshima Island, free-ranging and feral cats are harmful to wildlife populations. In this study, the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in these cats was examined using a newly developed Gaussia luciferase immunoprecipitation system assay. Of 1,363 cats, 123 cats (9.0%) was positive for T. gondii. The prevalence was significantly different in different areas; among cats in the rural are...

Invasive predator species, parti cularly mammals, are one of the primary extinction driv...
متن کاملDeveloping a community-based feral cat control program for Kangaroo Island
Various methods have been used to eliminate or control feral cats from selected areas, often islands. These include poisoned baits, biological agents (e.g. feline panleucopaenia), shooting, trapping and exclusion fencing, often applied in combination (e.g. Veitch 1985, 1991; van Rensbury et al. 1987; Coman 1991; Newsome 1991; Bloomer & Bester 1992). These techniques can be labourand area-intens...
